A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key public works projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in national works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.

- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a key rival party demanded an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and running of these national projects.
