As Sunbathers Fled Violence, Viral Photo Shows Beach Patrol Running ‘All Out’ Towards the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as inhabitant of Bondi, views the famous beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend evening, she, like many local residents, detected cracking sounds reverberating around the community.

“That was the initial assumption, but I thought it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” she explains. Exiting her residence, she saw people “streaming up Bondi Road”. Their expressions on display told her a crisis was unfolding.

As she stood on the street, talking to a duo who had hurried up the slope soaked, she heard someone moving up behind her. This turned out to be a lifeguard, dashing to Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – a distance of 1.5km – while carrying a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I just saw this flash of blue,” Ching describes. “He was just flying past. He was alone moving in the opposite way that the crowd was trying to get away from, carrying that large equipment and without footwear … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would tell you to go in the opposite direction.

“Without a second thought, but just completely pedal to the metal sprinting.”

A Powerful Moment of Heroism In the Wake of Crisis

The photograph Ching captured of the rescuer, since identified as Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as one of many instances of valour in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, explained that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the other members at Bondi, as well as to help surf lifesavers, police and ambulance crews caring for numerous the injured.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the beach facility adjacent to the location of the incident becoming a temporary medical station. It was shared that fellow lifeguards were also seen helping out, including rushing into the surf to save people who were struggling.

After the tragedy, comments of gratitude flooded in. One post conveyed thanks for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “compassion will always triumph over darkness”.

The group of beach patrol published a message, explaining they were “coming to terms with what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful words and solidarity. We are deeply moved by the compassion for our responders,” the team commented. “Eventually, we will recount our experiences in the hope that it supports those impacted.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the local authority that employs many full-time beach safety officers, said that the crew performed exceptionally from the second the shooting began through to late that evening.

“There have been so many powerful narratives, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” commented a local official.

“The team demonstrate selflessness every day in maintaining the safety of our world-famous beaches protected for visitors, but what we observed on that evening should be highly praised.

“While we mourn and process the terror of this brutal and barbaric terrorist attack, I think it is crucial that we reflect on just how much light we have observed in the midst of such evil.”
