Critical Role Season Four Unveils the Soldiers Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a gripping narrative featuring angels, demons, and sinister influences increasing in strength within Dol-Makjar.

Warning: Key plot points for the third episode of the new season follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the primary party to embark on their independent quest, apart from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes Teor (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie).

The Reason for Division

Given 13 cast members, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.

That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Schemers, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who are drawn to a typically action-packed fight-heavy story mode where peaceful solutions are scarce.

Initially, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 show why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the team has a clear idea where to head next after a violent first encounter with The Crow Keepers.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose demise kicked off the campaign’s events—used The Crow Keepers for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the enchanted items to auction.

The traitor then paid off his debts and fled to a fortified location in Gormalay, Timmony, north of the city, with Cyd pursuing him.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each character has a personal reason to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as the close ally and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in the northern area and advises that it is a nasty place.
  • The warrior and Wicander, having defied his house’s orders to execute the target and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their reputation as important members in the powerful family could help the group access areas they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Moreover, The fighter swore a unbreakable promise to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the powers that rule the city for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are notorious outlaws.
  • The warrior and The healer turned against the influential house and the legion of demons they are partnered with.
  • Teor is marked for death by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the northern region in pursuit of the traitor.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s follow-up content, we learn that the warrior group will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to assemble the Explorers and Planners groups.

Audiences can anticipate finding out which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, available to watch on next week.
