The acclaimed documentarian is now considered not just a historical storyteller; he represents an institution, an unparalleled production entity. With each new project heading for the PBS network, everybody wants an interview.

Burns has done “an astonishing number of podcasts”, he remarks, approaching the conclusion of his marathon promotional journey comprising four dozen cities, numerous film showings and innumerable conversations. “There seems to be a podcast for every citizen, and I believe I’ve appeared on most of them.”

Happily Burns possesses boundless energy, as expressive in conversation as he is accomplished while filmmaking. Still, the lack of surviving participants, visual documentation compelled the production to depend substantially on historical documents, combining the first-person voices of nearly 200 individual historic figures. This approach enabled to show spectators beyond the prominent leaders of the revolution but also to “dozens of others crucial to understanding, many of whom lack visual representation.

The filmmaker also explored his personal passion for maps and spatial representation. “I love maps,” he notes, “featuring increased geographical representation in this film than in all the other films I’ve done combined.”

The production crew recorded at nearly a hundred historical locations throughout the continent plus English locations to capture the landscape’s character and partnered extensively with re-enactors. The documentary argues, was no mere parochial quarrel over land, taxation and representation. Conversely, the project presents a blood-soaked struggle that finally engaged multiple global powers and improbably came to embody what it calls “the noble aspirations of humankind”.

Civil War Reality

Early dissatisfaction and objections leveled at London by far-flung British subjects across thirteen rebellious territories soon descended into a bloody domestic struggle, pitting family members against each other and turning communities into battlegrounds. In episode two, academic Alan Taylor comments: “The primary misunderstanding about the American Revolution centers on assuming it constituted a consolidating event for colonists. This ignores the truth that colonists battled fellow colonists.”

Historical Complexity

According to his perspective, the independence account that “for most of us is overwhelmed by emotionalism and nostalgia and lacks depth and insufficiently honors for what actually took place, all contributors and the widespread bloodshed.”

It was, he contends, an uprising that declared the transformative concept of the unalienable rights of people; a bloody domestic struggle, dividing revolutionaries and royalists; and a global war, continuing previous patterns of struggles among European powers for dominance in the New World.
