The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Time in 25 Years.

Following 25 long years, every region of the state is facing water scarcity. This significant achievement follows grueling years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened wildfire risks and pressured its huge agribusiness.

A Chart Indicates Zero Abnormally Dry Areas

A recent update from the federal monitoring program illustrated that California in its entirety is clear of dry or drought conditions. This change resulted from weeks of significant storms that topped up key lakes like Oroville and Shasta exceeding their long-term norms.

“If you’re 25 or younger you’ve only known in a world where California has been in or emerging from drought,” noted a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Soggy Celebrations

The journey here involved severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in 2023, leading to significant overflow, electrical failures, and deaths. Although that weather started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.

Even into late December, pockets like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Subsequent downpours at the beginning of January washed away those final dry conditions.

The Vital Sierra Snow Is Below Average

Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at only about 70% of the average for this date.

This frozen reservoir, which supplies a significant portion of the state's water as it melts in the spring, is a key piece for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is too early to make predictions for the coming year.

“What we are observing right now is increased rainfall over snowfall,” explained a state water resources manager. “We’d like to see the snow accumulation to improve by the start of April so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map shows a clean slate, attention turns to maintaining this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
