The network's Premier New Show of This Year Earns a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the network launched a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. During a period often characterized by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa voicing for all four central characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
The official statement also included praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and supported its distinctly quirky sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. Viewers found something surprisingly comfy about watching this charming family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to move the comedy genre beyond its long-running sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
Future Seasons
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns guaranteed to return, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The entire series is available for streaming on HBO Max.
